EasyJet has suspended one of its captains after he was allegedly spotted wandering through a five-star resort in Cape Verde while drunk and completely naked.
According to The Sun, the incident occurred in the early hours of 5 August after the unnamed pilot had spent an extended evening drinking at the hotel bar. Guests were shocked to see him moving through public areas without clothes.
The captain was originally scheduled to operate a return flight to Gatwick more than 36 hours later. However, after the airline received multiple complaints, he was removed from duty and a replacement pilot assigned.
An EasyJet spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that the pilot now faces a full investigation, stressing that passenger and crew safety is their “highest priority.”
Details of the Incident
The pilot reportedly arrived at the Melia Dunas Beach Resort and Spa on 4 August and began consuming alcohol shortly after checking in. Around 02:30 local time (04:30 BST) the next day, guests witnessed him stripping off before walking into the hotel reception, and later, the gym and spa areas.
One airline insider told The Sun:
“The pilot did not have a stitch on and reeked of alcohol. Anyone who saw the pilot cavorting naked in the early hours on the day before a flight would not dream of getting on a plane with him at the controls.”
Flight Schedule Affected
The pilot was set to command the 2,332-nautical-mile (4,318km) journey from Cape Verde to Gatwick on 6 August, but was immediately stood down in line with EasyJet procedures.
The airline’s Code of Business Ethics requires staff to act “with integrity when dealing with our people, our customers, our partners, and the communities within which we operate.”
