Ex-PSL Fast Bowler Banned for Ball Tampering in Australia

In an unfortunate development for Pakistan cricket’s overseas fraternity, fast bowler Mohammad Irfan, also known as Irfan Junior, has been found guilty of ball tampering during a domestic match in Australia, resulting in a suspension handed down by Cricket Victoria’s disciplinary tribunal.

According to Australian media reports, the incident occurred during a Victoria Premier League fixture, where umpires accused the 30-year-old speedster of deliberately altering the condition of the ball. Following a tribunal hearing, the charge was upheld and the punishment confirmed earlier this week.

Mohammad Irfan Jr will now serve a five-match ban for his actions.

Once a familiar face in Pakistan’s domestic circuit and the Pakistan Super League (PSL)—where he represented franchises including Karachi Kings, Multan Sultans, and Quetta Gladiators—Irfan Junior has been residing in Australia since 2020. After initially joining local club cricket, he became eligible to feature in official domestic tournaments across the country.

Cricket Victoria confirmed that the disciplinary process followed the standard code of conduct procedure, emphasizing the governing body’s zero-tolerance stance toward any breach of the game’s integrity laws.

Irfan’s suspension not only means he will miss several upcoming fixtures in Australia’s domestic season, dealing a blow to his local club’s campaign, but could also have a potential impact on his desire to obtain Australian citizenship. The pacer has a deal with Western Suburbs District Cricket Club (WSDCC) in Sydney, but his future may have become murkier after this incident.

While Irfan’s ban serves as a setback, it also stands as a reminder—both at home and abroad—that even seasoned professionals are not immune to the game’s strict code of conduct.
