WhatsApp’s latest AI-powered feature, Ask Meta AI, has quietly started rolling out in Pakistan, giving users the ability to interact with Meta’s AI chatbot directly inside their chats. This eliminates the need to open Google or start a separate Meta AI conversation.
How It Works
Once enabled, the Ask Meta AI icon appears inside the chat window. Users can:
-
Type questions or requests → The AI responds instantly within the same conversation.
-
Use it in both private and group chats → Everyone in the thread can see the AI’s reply.
-
Forward messages or media → When forwarding, “Meta AI” appears as an option, allowing users to generate context or answers without copy-pasting.
This integration makes AI responses more seamless and natural within WhatsApp’s ecosystem.
Extra Features
Ask Meta AI is not limited to direct answers. WhatsApp has also introduced AI-powered message summaries:
-
If a user falls behind on reading a long conversation, the AI can provide a private summary of unread messages.
-
This summary remains visible only to the user and does not affect other participants in the group.
Privacy & Limitations
Meta clarified that:
-
Only content sent directly to Ask Meta AI is processed by the system.
-
Regular chats remain end-to-end encrypted, in line with WhatsApp’s standard privacy protections.
However, one criticism has emerged: once the Ask Meta AI icon appears, it cannot be removed entirely. Users may mute or minimize it, but there is currently no option to turn it off completely.
Rollout in Pakistan
The feature is in early testing and currently available for some users in Pakistan.
-
Even on the same app version, not all devices display the feature.
-
WhatsApp appears to be rolling it out via server-side activation, meaning availability depends on Meta’s gradual release plan.
-
To increase chances of access, users should ensure they are on the latest version of WhatsApp.
WhatsApp has confirmed that Ask Meta AI is not active on all devices or in all regions yet, but Pakistan is included in the early rollout markets.
With this update, WhatsApp joins the growing list of platforms embedding AI tools directly into messaging apps, offering a more interactive and intelligent communication experience.
