GHANA — In a major move toward international growth, Mr. Hassan Muhammad Khan, Chancellor of Riphah International University, recently led a high-level strategic delegation to Ghana. The visit represents a significant milestone in South-South cooperation and outlines the university’s intent to establish a formal presence in West Africa.
Strategic Meetings on Medical and STEM Education
Joined by His Excellency Mr. Najeeb Durrani, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Ghana, the delegation met with the Honourable Minister for Education of Ghana and the Honourable Dr. Clement Abass Apaak, Deputy Minister for Education. The discussions focused on the establishment of a Riphah International University branch campus within Ghana.
This expansion is designed to support Ghana’s national objectives of strengthening STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and health sciences education. Following the meeting, both parties agreed to the formation of a joint working group and the drafting of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize the partnership.
Developing a “Knowledge Enclave” via Ghana Free Zones
Chancellor Hassan Muhammad Khan also held talks with Dr. Mary Awusi, CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA). These discussions explored how the university could utilize Ghana’s Free Zones for high-value service exports. Key areas of interest include:
-
The development of specialized teaching hospitals.
-
The establishment of advanced research laboratories.
-
Strategic investment in agribusiness.
By leveraging the GFZA’s incentives—including 10-year tax holidays and 100% foreign ownership—Riphah International University plans to create a “knowledge enclave.” This hub is intended to drive regional medical tourism and stimulate industrial growth across the region.
A Multi-Sectoral Commitment
The delegation included Mr. Noor Nabi Watto, Deputy High Commissioner, and Brigadier Syed Mujtaba Tirmizi (SI), Director of International Business Development. The visit reinforces Riphah International University’s broader commitment to exporting its educational model and nurturing the character of future leaders in the African region.
