Bill Gates

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has contributed $1 million to the World Health Organization (WHO) to support Pakistan in addressing the devastating impact of this year’s heavy monsoon floods.

Impact of the Floods

The floods have severely affected millions of people across the country, particularly in regions where healthcare facilities were already scarce. This funding will enable WHO to deliver urgent medical aid and strengthen essential health services in the hardest-hit areas.

WHO’s Response

During a visit to Swabi District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, WHO’s Representative in Pakistan, Dr. Dapeng Luo, expressed gratitude to the Gates Foundation for their timely support.

He explained that the funds will be used to:

  • Provide life-saving medicines and medical supplies.
  • Improve disease surveillance and tracking.
  • Strengthen outbreak response systems.

These measures are especially critical as floods often lead to spikes in waterborne diseases, malaria, and other health threats.

Focus Areas

The support will target 33 high-risk districts, prioritizing vulnerable populations such as:

  • Pregnant women and newborn babies
  • Young children
  • The elderly
  • People with disabilities
  • Internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities

Mobile health teams will also be dispatched to remote locations, ensuring that communities cut off from regular services are not left behind.

A Global Partnership in Action

This collaboration between the Gates Foundation and WHO underscores the importance of international cooperation in times of crisis. By bolstering healthcare capacity and emergency response, the initiative aims to bring much-needed relief and hope to thousands of families struggling to rebuild their lives after the devastating floods.
