Chinese automaker BYD has introduced its groundbreaking megawatt charging technology at Dubai Festival City, showcasing how electric vehicles (EVs) could soon be powered up almost as quickly as filling a petrol tank.
Charging Breakthrough
Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD and CEO of its Americas and Europe divisions, revealed that the system can provide up to 400 kilometers of driving range in just five minutes.
“It’s like going to the gas station and grabbing a coffee,” Li said, emphasizing the convenience of the technology.
Although no live charging hubs are operational yet, this marked the first international demonstration of the technology outside of China — a key milestone for the company’s global ambitions.
Wider Rollout Plans
BYD confirmed that from next year, the new charging system will be compatible with all electric cars. The automaker is partnering with stakeholders across the UAE and the Middle East to deploy more than 600 high-speed charging stations by the end of 2026. The exact number of sites within the Emirates is still under review.
UAE as a Testing Ground
Li described the UAE as the perfect launchpad for futuristic mobility.
“This is the dream, and the UAE is the place to make your dream come true. Our company stands for ‘Build Your Dreams,’ and this country makes things happen,” she told attendees.
The charging network will be equipped with universal connectors, allowing most EVs to plug in, though Li noted that not every model will support maximum charging speeds.
Boost for EV Adoption
Experts believe that ultra-fast charging could be a turning point for EV adoption in the Emirates, where the government is pushing forward with its Net Zero by 2050 strategy. Faster charging times, Li explained, would remove one of the biggest hurdles for drivers: long waiting periods at charging points.
Future Technologies
Alongside its charging innovations, BYD is investing in autonomous driving systems and smart vehicle technologies designed to improve the driving experience in the Middle East and beyond.
The unveiling reflects BYD’s broader goal of accelerating sustainable mobility while positioning the UAE as a regional hub for EV transformation.
