Frank Caprio

Frank Caprio, the widely admired Rhode Island municipal judge and television personality, has passed away at the age of 88.

Caprio rose to national fame through his courtroom series Caught in Providence, which aired between 2018 and 2020 and earned several Daytime Emmy nominations. His family announced on his official Instagram account on August 20 that he died peacefully after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

“Judge Caprio was cherished for his compassion, humility, and deep faith in the goodness of people. His kindness, humor, and generosity touched millions in the courtroom and beyond,” the statement read. It also highlighted his role as not just a respected judge, but also a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Known for his empathetic and often lighthearted approach on the bench, Caprio became affectionately known as “The Nicest Judge in the World.” Clips of his courtroom interactions regularly went viral, showing his ability to balance justice with compassion. His television popularity extended online, where he built a massive social media following, attracting more than three million Instagram followers and 1.6 million fans on TikTok.

In 2023, Caprio revealed in a deeply emotional Instagram video that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which he described as “an insidious form of cancer.” Just one day before his passing, he shared a heartfelt message from his hospital bed, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support from around the world, while asking for continued strength.

Tributes poured in following the announcement of his passing. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee honored Caprio in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), calling him a “Rhode Island treasure” who faced his illness with extraordinary courage. The governor also ordered that flags across the state be lowered to half-staff in his memory.

Judge Caprio leaves behind not only a legacy of justice but also a global reminder that kindness and compassion can transform lives—even in the courtroom.
