Jinnah Hospital Karachi

Doctors at Jinnah Hospital, Karachi, have achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing the hospital’s first knee cancer surgery, restoring mobility to a 26-year-old patient through the implantation of an artificial knee.

Complex Surgery Restores Mobility

According to Dr. Farukh, a member of the surgical team, the young patient had been diagnosed with cancer in the knee and lower leg. A joint team of orthopedic and plastic surgeons carried out the complex four-hour-long procedure, during which the tumor was carefully removed and a prosthetic knee was implanted.

Post-operative test results confirmed the complete removal of cancer, providing the patient with a cancer-free outcome. Dr. Farukh further revealed that the artificial knee—priced between Rs1 million and Rs1.1 million—was provided free of cost by the hospital. Globally, such implants remain effective for 20 to 25 years, ensuring long-term mobility.

The overall cost of the surgery, estimated at Rs3.5 million, was also entirely covered by the hospital, allowing the patient to receive world-class treatment without financial burden.

Surgical Team

The orthopedic team included Dr. Farukh, Dr. Muzaffar, Dr. Wali, Dr. Shahid, and Dr. Khushal, while the plastic surgery team comprised Dr. Agha Waseem, Dr. Mehak, Dr. Komal, and Dr. Farooq.

Pakistan Develops Breast Cancer Prevention Vaccine

In a separate but equally significant healthcare development, Pakistan has successfully created a breast cancer prevention vaccine. The Institute of Public Health Punjab formulated the vaccine, and discussions are currently underway for the large-scale production of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja praised the breakthrough, stressing that the provincial government is committed to advancing healthcare innovation. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Javed Akram highlighted the impact of the vaccine, explaining that administering three doses to girls aged 12 would provide lifelong protection against breast cancer, marking a groundbreaking step for women’s health in Pakistan.
