Lahore is set to launch a major project to build 1,000 groundwater recharge wells across the city. The initiative aims to maintain and restore the underground water table, which is under threat due to over-extraction.
Secretary Housing Noor-ul-Amin Mengal visited the Liberty Chowk groundwater recharge well site, where WASA MD Ghufran Ahmed briefed him on the project. Officials explained that each recharge well can replenish up to 8,000 gallons of water daily. Currently, three recharge wells are operational in Lahore.
The plan includes building recharge wells at 15 key locations in the city. According to Mengal, the project follows the Punjab Chief Minister’s directive to introduce modern engineering solutions for water conservation. The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) will allocate space for recharge wells in all city parks.
Mengal emphasized that special care will be taken to protect existing trees during construction. He said important decisions have been made to address environmental pollution, and WASA Punjab will expand groundwater recharge points across the province.
“Water is a blessing, and we must prevent its wastage,” Mengal said, urging all departments to complete the project with full commitment.
