In a development that could reshape Pakistan’s economic future, the Pakistan Navy, in partnership with China, has identified massive gas reserves deep under the Arabian Sea, according to Rear Admiral (Retd) Fawad Amin Baig.
The revelation was made during a special segment of Capital Talk on Geo News, coinciding with Pakistan Navy Day on September 8.
A Strategic Breakthrough
Rear Admiral Baig said Pakistan’s territorial waters are not only rich in minerals but also contain immense marine resources. “If tapped wisely, these resources could dramatically improve Pakistan’s economic outlook,” he noted, crediting the Navy’s exploration initiatives under the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff.
The discovery follows a detailed seabed survey carried out with Chinese assistance, which confirmed the presence of substantial natural gas reserves beneath Pakistani waters.
The Next Phase: Investment and Technology
Baig stressed that while the discovery itself is historic, the real challenge lies in attracting global investors with the financial capacity and advanced technology required for extraction.
“With the right investment and cutting-edge technology, this hidden wealth can be harnessed to fuel Pakistan’s development,” he said.
Challenges Ahead
Rear Admiral Baig also underlined the obstacles Pakistan faces in unlocking this offshore wealth. He referred to “hostile fifth-generation warfare tactics” that often discourage investors at moments of national progress.
Despite such challenges, he expressed optimism. He highlighted the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) and the combined efforts of Pakistan’s military and political leadership in shaping a defence and economic strategy designed to overcome barriers.
Deepening Pakistan–China Cooperation
The discovery aligns with ongoing Pakistan-China collaboration in energy exploration. A joint statement issued last year reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to supporting Pakistan in offshore oil and gas projects, including natural gas hydrates.
China has also pledged to encourage its companies to invest in Pakistan’s offshore oil and gas blocks, expanding the scope of cooperation to include mining and industrial development.
Potential Economic Game-Changer
For Pakistan, currently grappling with economic pressures and energy shortages, the discovery could prove transformative. Experts believe that if developed with proper planning, international collaboration, and investor confidence, these reserves could:
- Strengthen energy security
- Reduce reliance on imported fuels
- Spur industrial growth
- Generate jobs and long-term economic stability
Summing up the significance, Rear Admiral Baig remarked:
“The Pakistan Navy has not only safeguarded our seas but also opened the door to immense economic opportunities beneath them.”
