Lahore, Pakistan – Punjab province is set to get its first Tourism Highway, with the redevelopment of a 13-kilometer stretch from Quaid-e-Azam Interchange to the Wagha Border.

Once a neglected and deteriorated route, the road is being transformed into a modern gateway for both commuters and international visitors. The Wagha Border, known for its iconic flag-lowering ceremony, attracts thousands of tourists and religious yatris each year.

Project Highlights

The multi-billion-rupee project features:

  • A dual carriageway with service roads
  • Solar-powered streetlights for energy efficiency
  • Improved drainage systems
  • A 10-kilometer decorative facade wall showcasing Pakistani culture

These upgrades aim to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and present a welcoming first impression of Pakistan to visitors entering from India.

Official Remarks

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif shared progress updates on social media, stating:

“Work on the 13 KM road from Quaid-e-Azam Interchange to Wagha Border is in full swing. Dual carriageways, service roads, solar lights, and a 10 KM decorative facade wall have completely changed the dynamics of an area that was once most neglected.”

Tourism and Economic Impact

Officials believe the initiative goes beyond infrastructure, describing it as a “tourism-first approach.” By providing a smoother, world-class route to one of the country’s busiest tourist spots, the government hopes to:

  • Strengthen Pakistan’s image internationally
  • Encourage repeat tourism from India
  • Generate economic activity in surrounding areas

Local residents are also expected to benefit from shorter travel times, safer commutes, and new commercial opportunities along the corridor.

A Gateway to Pakistan

The new Tourism Highway is poised to serve not only as a transportation upgrade but also as a symbolic entryway to Pakistan, highlighting the nation’s hospitality, culture, and commitment to modern development.
