The Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC) marked Independence Day with a groundbreaking achievement, performing 14 Transcatheter Aortic Valve (TAV) surgeries in a single day on August 14.
This remarkable feat surpasses the previous record held by Serbia, where 13 such surgeries were conducted in one day, according to PIC spokesperson Riffat Anjum.
Dr. Ali Raza, Medical Director of PIC, highlighted the immense challenge of replacing heart valves for 14 patients in a single day without the need for open-heart surgery. The TAV procedure proved to be a life-saving alternative for these patients, who were between 70 and 80 years old and unable to undergo traditional open-heart surgery.
Dr. Abidullah, head of the cardiology department, emphasized that this achievement gave a new lease on life to elderly patients. He credited the success to the tireless efforts of PIC’s expert cardiology and cardiac surgery teams, who worked around the clock to make this milestone possible.
The record-breaking surgeries were carried out with the collaboration of skilled cardiologists and surgeons from leading hospitals across Pakistan. Professor Dr. Shahkar Ahmed Shah, Dean of PIC, praised the dedication of the entire team, including doctors, cath lab and operation theater staff, technologists, anesthetists, nurses, and support staff.
Dr. Shahkar described this accomplishment as a significant milestone for Pakistan’s medical sector, showcasing the country’s ability to provide world-class healthcare with advanced facilities and expertise.
