A consumer court in Karachi has issued a notice to a coffee shop in DHA Phase VIII after a complaint accused it of illegally using the name and logo of a Thailand-based café chain. The café’s management has been summoned to appear before the court on October 31 to respond to the allegations.
The complaint was filed by Syed Muhammad Ali Jafri through his lawyer, Abdul Ahad Khan, under the Sindh Consumer Protection Act, 2015. It alleges that Mondo Coffee Bar, located in DHA, has been imitating the trademark, logo, and overall design of the Thailand brand Mondo Espresso & Tea Bar to mislead customers and profit unlawfully.
According to the complaint, Jafri visited the café in May after seeing it promoted as part of the international chain. However, he later discovered that the outlet had no official link with the Phuket-based brand. Mondo Espresso & Tea Bar also issued a clarification on its Instagram page, confirming it was not affiliated with the Karachi café.
The lawyer stated that the local café had been using coffee cups, takeaway bags, and tissue papers with a logo and design nearly identical to the Thai brand’s. He argued that this constituted false and deceptive marketing, violating Sections 13 and 21 of the Sindh Consumer Protection Act.
The complaint further noted that the plaintiff qualifies as a consumer, while the café fits the definition of a service provider under the law. Jafri has sought Rs. 5 million in damages, citing financial loss and mental distress caused by misleading advertising.
After reviewing the complaint, the Consumer Court (South) directed Mondo Coffee Bar to submit a written reply and supporting documents by October 31, 2025. The case will be taken up later this month for a detailed hearing.
