The Punjab government has introduced a major policy initiative to support nursing graduates by offering structured internship opportunities coupled with financial benefits.
Monthly Stipend for BSN Nursing Interns
Under the new framework, graduates holding Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees will receive a monthly stipend during their mandatory one-year internship. The stipend will be equivalent to the basic salary of a charge nurse and will be disbursed through the Punjab Health Foundation.
This step is aimed at easing the financial burden on fresh graduates while ensuring they gain practical exposure before joining the workforce.
Internship Placement and Priority Criteria
The government has laid down clear priority criteria for internship placements:
- First preference will be given to graduates of government nursing colleges affiliated with teaching hospitals.
- If positions remain vacant, graduates from other government nursing colleges will also be accommodated.
This approach ensures fair distribution while prioritizing those connected to larger healthcare teaching institutions.
One-Year Mandatory Internship for Practical Training
The internship will span one year, during which nursing graduates will rotate across various hospital departments. This hands-on training is designed to provide them with comprehensive clinical exposure and strengthen their professional readiness.
Officials stated that making the internship mandatory is a deliberate step to ensure that all graduates acquire the practical skills and discipline required to excel in the healthcare sector.
With this new policy, the Punjab government has not only addressed the issue of practical training gaps for nursing graduates but also provided a financial cushion to help them transition smoothly into the profession.
