EV promises

Beijing, China – The newly launched Dongfeng Aeolus L8 PHEV is turning heads in the automotive world with its record-breaking efficiency and range. Claiming a tested comprehensive range of 1,395 miles, the L8 is poised to reshape the global plug-in hybrid (PHEV) market.

Powered by Mach Electric Hybrid Technology

The Aeolus L8 PHEV is equipped with the advanced Mach Electric Hybrid system, combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, an electric motor, and a 30.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Together, they produce a combined output of 355 horsepower, delivering strong performance while maintaining excellent efficiency.

According to CLTC standards, the vehicle offers two official all-electric range configurations: 78 miles and 115 miles. However, in real-world testing conducted by the China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC), the Aeolus L8 achieved an impressive 154-mile all-electric range and the headline-grabbing 1,395-mile comprehensive range.

CATARC: China’s Premier Auto Testing Authority

Established in 1985, CATARC plays a critical role in China’s auto industry by overseeing research, vehicle testing, and regulatory compliance. The institute’s validation of the Aeolus L8’s results adds credibility to Dongfeng’s ambitious performance claims.98 mpg-e Efficiency and Fast-Charging Capability

Beyond range, the Aeolus L8 PHEV boasts a fuel efficiency equivalent to 98 mpg-e, placing it among the most efficient plug-in hybrids available.

Its 30.3 kWh battery supports 3C fast charging, enabling a charge from 20% to 80% in just 18 minutes under optimal conditions. This capability makes the L8 equally suitable for short urban commutes and long-distance travel, offering drivers unmatched flexibility.

Advanced Driver Assistance and AI-Powered Interior

The Dongfeng Aeolus L8 also emphasizes safety and technology. It comes with 28 Level 2 ADAS functions, including:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Parking Assistance

Inside, the vehicle offers a modern cockpit with a built-in voice assistant powered by DeepSeek and ByteDance’s Doubao AI models, giving drivers intuitive control over infotainment and vehicle systems.

Safety highlights include six airbags and a digital rearview mirror, designed to provide enhanced visibility and improved passenger protection.

Global Ambitions and Brand Strategy

Dongfeng has ambitious plans for the Aeolus L8, with an overseas rollout targeting Middle Eastern and South American markets. Originally launched in 2009 under the Fengshen nameplate, the Aeolus brand has expanded to include sedans and SUVs such as the S30, A30, and Haoji.

As part of its corporate strategy, Dongfeng has consolidated its eπ, Fengshen, and Nano sub-brands into Dongfeng eπ Technology, focusing on electrified and intelligent vehicles. The company now operates under two pillars:

  • Dongfeng eπ for high-tech new energy vehicles
  • Dongfeng Fengshen for traditional and hybrid models

At a recent event, Dongfeng eπ also revealed its roadmap for solid-state battery EVs by 2026, promising improved safety, higher energy density, and ranges exceeding 620 miles.

A New Benchmark for Plug-In Hybrids

With its groundbreaking tested range, impressive efficiency, and advanced features, the Dongfeng Aeolus L8 PHEV sets a new benchmark in the global PHEV market. As Dongfeng prepares to expand internationally, the L8 signals both the company’s technological strength and its ambition to become a leading player in the new energy vehicle space.
