Pakistan registered an important win over the UAE in their Asia Cup Group A clash held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
Pakistan’s Bowling Seals the Match
Set a target of 147 runs, the UAE were bundled out for 105 in 17.4 overs. The hosts showed some resistance through a 44-run stand between Rahul Chopra (35) and Dhruv Parashar (20) for the fourth wicket, but once the pair was dismissed, the remainder of the batting order collapsed under pressure.
For Pakistan, the bowling attack worked in unison. Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Abrar Ahmed each grabbed two wickets, cutting through the UAE batting and ensuring Pakistan secured a comfortable win.
Pakistan’s Innings: A Rocky Start and a Strong Finish
Earlier, Pakistan faced early trouble after being sent in to bat first. Junaid Siddique gave UAE the perfect start, dismissing both openers cheaply. Sahibzada Farhan was dismissed for 5, while Saim Ayub fell for a duck, leaving Pakistan struggling in the opening overs.
However, Fakhar Zaman stepped up to stabilize the innings. His aggressive 50 off 36 balls, decorated with three boundaries and two sixes, was the highlight of Pakistan’s batting. He built a crucial 61-run partnership with skipper Salman Agha (20 off 27), which gave the visitors much-needed momentum.
The middle order faltered again, but Shaheen Afridi delivered a late blitz with the bat. His explosive cameo of 29 runs off just 14 balls, including three fours and two sixes, pushed Pakistan to a fighting total of 146/9 in 20 overs.
UAE’s Bowling Efforts
For the UAE, Junaid Siddique emerged as the standout performer, finishing with an excellent four-wicket haul. Simranjeet Singh also impressed, claiming three wickets from his full quota, ensuring Pakistan had to work hard for their runs.
Off-Field Drama Delays Start
The match was delayed by nearly an hour due to tensions between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC). The PCB objected to the appointment of Andy Pycroft as match referee, citing the recent handshake controversy in the earlier fixture against India.
When the ICC refused to replace him, the PCB temporarily kept its players at the team hotel in protest. After negotiations, the issue was resolved, and the team eventually agreed to take the field.
What’s Next for Pakistan
With this victory, Pakistan gained crucial momentum in the group stage. Their next challenge will be a highly anticipated Super Four clash against arch-rivals India on Sunday, a match expected to draw global attention.
