China’s recent Victory Day parade provided the global audience with a rare glimpse into some of its most sophisticated military capabilities, with the spotlight on the DongFeng-5C intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
Showcasing the DF-5C
The DF-5C is a liquid-fueled, long-range missile capable of striking targets across continents, making it a cornerstone of China’s nuclear deterrence policy. Its appearance at the parade was intended not only to display advanced weaponry but also to send a message about China’s expanding defense capacity and technological progress.
Expanding Military Strength
Beyond the DF-5C, the parade highlighted a diverse range of modern systems. Hypersonic glide vehicles drew significant attention for their ability to travel at extremely high velocities while performing unpredictable maneuvers, rendering interception nearly impossible.
Attendees also witnessed the unveiling of road-mobile missile systems, which can be relocated and launched rapidly, offering the military enhanced flexibility and a stronger battlefield response. Meanwhile, anti-ship cruise missiles were prominently featured, underscoring China’s determination to reinforce its naval defense and safeguard its maritime interests.
Focus on Unmanned Technology
The parade further emphasized China’s progress in autonomous and robotic platforms. Robotic dog drones, which can be deployed for surveillance, reconnaissance, and tactical assistance, took part in the demonstrations. Additionally, unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) designed for critical naval missions such as reconnaissance, anti-mining, and deep-sea operations, were showcased.
A Glimpse Into the Future
By presenting these advanced systems, China highlighted its commitment to integrating artificial intelligence, robotics, and state-of-the-art engineering into its broader defense strategy. The array of weaponry and emerging technologies reflected Beijing’s ambition to position itself as a leading military power on the world stage.
